What Is Tokenization?

The one-minute version: what tokenization means, what it adds that traditional ownership can't, and where the largest institutions are building right now.

Tokenization is the process of converting ownership rights in a real-world asset into a digital token on a blockchain. The token represents your claim on the asset — a share of a property, a fraction of a Treasury bill, an ounce of gold — without requiring you to physically hold the asset or go through a traditional financial intermediary to transfer it.

Think of it like a digital title deed. A paper title deed for a house represents your ownership without being the house itself. A tokenized real estate position works the same way — the token is the record, held on a ledger that thousands of computers maintain simultaneously and that no single party can alter.

What tokenization adds that traditional ownership can't:

The largest institutions in finance are already building here. BlackRock's BUIDL fund — $2.56 billion in tokenized Treasuries across 9 blockchains — is the market's largest product. The DTCC begins full commercial tokenized securities service in October 2026. The infrastructure is real.
